Washington, D.C., USA (WNEWS BREAKING) – President Donald Trump was safely evacuated Saturday night after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where authorities say the suspect appeared to target Trump or members of his administration.

The incident happened at the Washington Hilton during the high-profile annual media dinner, attended by Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet officials, journalists and guests. According to Reuters, a gunman opened fire near a security checkpoint and struck a Secret Service agent, whose bullet-resistant vest prevented more serious injury. The agent was later released from the hospital.

Suspect in custody

Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Reuters reported that investigators believe Allen had been staying at the Washington Hilton before the attack. Officials said he was armed with a shotgun, handgun and multiple knives.

U.S. officials said the suspect appeared to be acting alone, though investigators are still reviewing possible motives, writings, travel history and electronic devices. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said preliminary findings suggest Trump was likely a target.

Third apparent attempt on Trump’s life

If formally classified by authorities as an assassination attempt, the dinner shooting would mark the third apparent attempt on Trump’s life, following the 2024 shooting in Pennsylvania and the later Florida golf-course incident. Officials have not yet released a final charging theory or full motive.

Security questions after high-profile breach

The shooting has raised immediate questions about how an armed suspect was able to get so close to an event packed with senior U.S. officials, media leaders and political figures. The Washington Hilton also has historical significance: it was the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.

Trump later praised law enforcement and Secret Service agents for moving quickly, while officials said further charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
