The Biden administration on Wednesday announced itās cancelling seven oil exploration leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, an area that includes the breeding grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd.
Gwichāin people consider the area āthe sacred place where life begins.ā
āItās a step in the right direction for this administration to make,ā said Bernadette Dementieff, executive director of AlaskaāsĀ Gwichāin Steering Committee. āWe still have a lot of work to do to permanently protect [the refuge], butĀ Iām really enjoying the news.ā
