Standing on a stage inĀ a room filled withĀ community members, band councillors and government ministers, Kitchenuhmaykoosib InninuwugĀ (KI)Ā Chief Donny Morris called this an emotional day for his community.
āWe are taking back how we are raising our children,ā Morris said Tuesday.
The First Nation, with roughly 960 people living in the fly-inĀ community 600 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ont., is taking back jurisdiction over child and family services with the passage of it own law and creation of itsĀ own family welfare agency, called Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onnakonikewin (KIDO). In the localĀ AnishininiimowinĀ language, KIDO means Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Family Law.
