Tumbler Ridge, BC, Canada (WNEWS) – Authorities have named the suspected gunman in the mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby home on February 10, 2026. They confirmed that nine people, including the suspect, died, and about 27 others were injured.

In a briefing on Wednesday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) identified the suspected shooter as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, a resident of Tumbler Ridge, and confirmed she died from an apparent self-inflicted wound at the school during the attack.

Officials said Van Rootselaar was a transgender woman who identified as female, though she was born male. Police stressed they are using the name and identity she chose publicly.

Updated Casualty Figures, Victims and Location of Attacks

The RCMP updated earlier reports after checking on a critically injured victim who was first thought to have died. The death toll is now nine, including the suspect.

According to police:

  • Several victims, including students and a teacher, were found dead inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
  • RCMP said Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, killed her mother and stepbrother at home before opening fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
  • One educator and five students were found dead at the school, most of them in the library. The students were between 12 and 13 years old.
  • About 27 people were injured. Many were taken to local hospitals, and some were airlifted for further treatment.

Authorities believe the suspect acted alone and say there are no other suspects. The motive is still being investigated.

Suspect Background and Police Remarks

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said Van Rootselaar “was identified as she chose to be identified publicly and on social media.” He also confirmed that police had previous mental health-related interactions with her and had earlier seized firearms from her family’s home. It is not yet clear how she got the weapons used in the shootings.

Police said Van Rootselaar was not a student at the school during the shooting and had dropped out several years before.

Officials said they are sharing details about gender identity to be factual and respectful, and not to suggest it caused the violence. Experts point out that most transgender people are not violent, and that gender identity should not be linked to violent crime motives without clear evidence. (General reporting norms)
