Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada (WNEWS BREAKING) ā A mass shooting took place Tuesday afternoon in the small northeastern B.C. community of Tumbler Ridge. At least 9 people, including the suspected shooter, are dead, and more than 25 others are injured, according to Canadian authorities and several news outlets.
Shooting Erupts at Local Secondary School
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time. Officers found several victims inside the school, including six who had died.
Police also found the suspected shooter dead inside the school from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
Two people were airlifted to larger medical centers with serious or life-threatening injuries. Around 25 others received treatment at local hospitals for less severe wounds. Authorities have not yet released the identities or ages of the victims. Police are working to identify everyone affected and will notify families as soon as possible.
Floyd confirmed that the suspected shooter found dead at the school was the same person described in the active shooter alert sent to phones in the area earlier today.
Shootings at Nearby Residence
Police also found two more victims dead at a nearby home believed to be connected to the incident. Another person who was taken to the hospital died on the way, bringing the total number of deaths to ten, including the suspect.
Community on Lockdown, Alert Lifted
Residents in Tumbler Ridge, a community of about 2,400 people, were first told to shelter in place as police responded. The alert was lifted by evening after police said they did not believe any suspects were still at large. Police later confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public and the area is now considered safe.
Tumbler Ridge Secondary and the nearby elementary school were both locked down during the response. The schools will stay closed for the rest of the week as students and staff reunite with their families.
Official Response and Investigation Underway
The BC RCMP Major Crime Section is now leading the investigation, with help from emergency responders in nearby areas and health services, including STARS air ambulance units.
Peace River South MLA Larry Neufeld said the province is sending resources to support the community and stressed that public safety is the main concern.
B.C. Premier David Eby has offered his condolences.

British Columbiaās Minister of Public Safety called the shooting ādevastatingā and promised full support for the families of victims and first responders, according to multiple news outlets.
Chief Supt. Floyd said police do not yet know what may have motivated the tragedy and thanked community members for their help during the response. He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and officers are actively working to determine possible motives. Police will share updates with the public as soon as more information becomes available.
āWe are grateful for the co-operation shown as officers continue to advance the investigation,ā he said.
He said police believe they have identified the shooter, but will not release details at this time to protect privacy and the integrity of the investigation.
Floyd acknowledged that community members have many questions and said police will provide answers in the days ahead.
